Night Moon

In our sun room, the moon shines through the tree limbs which are bare in Winter.

Karen loves this view. She has asked me several times this Winter to take this shot.

It’s not perfect, but it’s evocative of the mood of a Winter’s night.

I hope to make a better version next month.

Bingo Moon

Bingo Moon

Yesterday, I was moaning over the fact that I had left my camera at home. The full moon rose out my window at work. The landscape at sunset with the full moon at about 3 o’clock with the rosy glow of the sunset on the buildings with a brilliant blue backdrop was missed. Dang.

Today, I took the camera and whole pack of gear. Be prepared is my mantra. When trying to get a unique photo every day, that mantra better stick.

Driving towards a destination on the East side of town, I turned the corner and there was the moon, trying to peek out from behind moving cloud cover.

I pulled into the parking lot of a local bingo hall. Their parking lot was largely still ice covered with deep ruts from previous cars. I bounced around trying to get the best angle for my capture, all the while agonizing over every frame being lost. I stopped, grabbed the camera out of it’s protected nest, picked up the portable window mount and mated the two together.

Then came the decisions. How fast, what aperture, what focal length, how to frame it. I started taking captures with a 2 second delay, and varying the options. Eventually, I called a halt. Perfection was probably not going to be mine tonight.

I came home, wondering what I had. Anticipation mixed with fear. Did I have any worthy photo?

I’m happy with the result.

I’ll leave you to your take on it.

It reminds me of the serendipity of every act in my life. I am, I do, and I’ll never know how far or how much what I am and do affects others. So, I simply do my best, flawed though it may be and leave the worry over perfection behind me.

Moon Over

Moon Over

I had to make a run to the bank this morning before work. On my way in to work, I was keeping my eyes open for “interesting” scenes. Off to my left, I spied the moon above buildings and trees. As fortune would have it, I was coming to a red light. Quickly I grabbed my camera with one hand, lowered the window and fired off two shots. This is the second.

Is it perfect, nope. But I liked being greeted by the moon in the morning. The building is an older apartment building on 2nd street. It’s seen better years, but has good bones, I’ll bet. I like the brick and stone combination at the top. I wonder if anyone goes up to the roof in the Summer to catch a few rays of tan time?

Instead of just presenting the photo, I took time to think up a caption and make a bit more of a presentation. Moon River was stuck in my mind. Then I was saying “Moon over….” several times, trying to come up with the right phrase for a title. Then it gelled: Moon Over! What more is needed?

Moon 11/1/06 One

Moon 11/1/06 One

Right as I was leaving work, I stopped, clipped my window mount onto my camera, framed, and grabbed these photos of the moon. Bright and clear in the setting sky.

What is it about the moon which attracts me? Probably it connects with that part of me tied to the greater universe as well as my primitive roots. It reminds me of my small part in life, but even this small part can have such a large effect on all.

Even as the moon pulls the tides on the earth, over 100,000 miles away, so do I have an effect on each person, even those I never meet. I am connected to everyone and how I act affects many more than I know.

I remember watching, entranced as Neil Armstong and Buzz Aldrin walked around up there. I heard their words and saw their enthusiasm, full of life, they were and still are. The achievement seems so long ago, yet as near as the next moon rise.

I like the moon.
