Walking through the ruins of an abandoned city old Crystal Springs, Mississippi on the Natchez Trace Parkway, I was shocked at the condition of this pine tree.
It was tall, and looked in good health with the great exception of the condition of of the outer layer of trunk. It was scraped and scratched and torn all the way around the trunk, as if some creature had been tearing strips of it away. Perhaps some birds or some mammal with claws, using the bark to build its nest.
With the ruins of the old village all around, this outer tatters added to the feeling of abandonment.
Powerful. Majestic.
