One of my favorite spots in Riverside Park, which hugs one bank of the Sangamon River in Sangamon County, part of the State of Illinois.
I can imagine future President Abraham Lincoln, piloting a flatboat down the river’s twists and turns, heading towards New Salem, Illinois. Perhaps it’s that history that draws me in and sparks my imagination as I see the autumn leaves float past.
It was an unusually warm day for late October. The temperature rose to the low 70′s on the Fahrenheit scale, with a kick of humidity adding to the warmth. The rains have been adding to the river’s flow, but as you can see, there’s still a ways to go to get back to normal river depth. The mud wasn’t too bad on the road that meanders by the riverbank. The abundance of fallen leaves helped make the walk easier.
I’ll be back to this place, likely when the snow falls.

What a lovely view. I will have to check out Riverside Park next time I’m in Springfield.
Out Peoria Road (remember the Skyrocket bar?) towards Sherman. An easy side trip past the State Fairgrounds. Highly recommended.
