I saw the cloud of dust before I spied the harvester.
The drought of 2012 will go down as one of the worst for farmers in decades. The corn is being harvested, but most will end up not with ears of corn bursting with golden kernels, but as stunted stalks with little value. Most farmers have or are harvesting weeks before it would normally be done. There’s no use waiting for corn that won’t be coming.
I felt bad for the farmers, one in the harvester, one in the tractor, pulling a grain wagon. I almost didn’t stop, not wanting to bring any further pain to them as they toiled to gather ruined crops. I decided that documenting the scene was worth the momentary reminder of the disaster.
It’s rained this past weekend. Too late for the corn, it may help the soybeans.
