Breaking Free

The Illinois State Fair is making its run this week. It’s an agricultural fair, featuring livestock competitions, horse shows, and horse racing. There’s the usual carnival rides and games, enough golf-carts to cause the occasional foot-traffic hazard, and anything-you-can-think-of on a stick.

The horses at the fair had me thinking when I spied this glass figurine this afternoon.

This is a carousel horse, found on the merry-go-round. The delight and fright of many a child as they go round and round and up and down as the music plays on and the people flash by in a blur. I can recall being scared witless as I hung on with all my might, imagining being flung off into the crowd. I can also recall the glee as I ran my imaginary race, faster than the poor folks behind me.

Imagination is a wonderful ability, vastly underutilized by some, a source of inspiration and delight to most.
