A Thread of Ice

I almost pass this image by, as I was walking past the interpretive center at Lincoln Memorial Gardens.

Something caught my eye as being odd.

Icicles are common, as the freezing weather and sunny days melt off snow from rooftops and form these frozen drips, hanging from the eaves. What had me looking twice, as I was scanning my path for a sure footing and something of visual interest, was the separation between the icicles.

Looking close as I could from the ground, I saw the silken thread of a spider’s web that had provided a dual location for the water’s path. Two separate icicles that were sharing the same spider’s thread. Gravity and the sun set the liquid into motion, and the single, strong string of spider’s silk gave a unique foundation for these arrows of ice.

I can’t say I’ve ever seen this before.

A treat, provided by nature, and found because I was searching for something interesting and new.
