Watching the Day Go By

Sunset as seen by a lonely road behind our airport.

The airport tower is to the left and a radar array to the right on the horizon. Overhead, a passenger get gives a 30,000 foot view of the prolonged sunset to a plane full of travelers.

Me, I’m standing by the side of the road, hoping that I’m not going to have to explain why I’m staring at the sunset, taking photographs by an airport. No one stopped to chat, in fact, only one car came by in the 30 minutes or so that I was out there admiring the light show.

What a magnificent show it was. The sky turned all sorts of colors and the clouds provided a superb canvas for the sunlight to paint on. A new landscape every few minutes as the setting sun changed the light falling on everything, the grass and the cornfield stubble included.

I’m going to have to start bringing a folding chair with me, so I can sit a spell and enjoy the scenery.

Join me, won’t you? We’ll watch the same sun, each from our separate point of view.

I’ll be the one with a camera and a sense of wonder.

  1. I’ll be the one with the mugs of hot cocoa. (or whisky. Whichever.)

  2. Thank you, Kelly. Can you imagine a more peaceful way to spend time outside? Blanket and warm drinks would be mandatory at this time of year.

  3. Glorious, Matt. So many elements to like … The simple country road leading to the horizon, corn stubble following alongside … The clouds marching toward the south … The sun that gives you the ‘stand and wait’ color changes, during which you’re poised for the perfect shot. Like Mocha, I wish I could pull up a chair beside you, and enjoy these moments only the Midwest can offer.
