Great Blue Heron

I just happened along at the right time. The great blue heron was walking in the shallows, stirring up the bottom looking for some food. A step forward and pause, then another. As if it were posing just for me instead of being about the business of survival.

This would have happened without me being there.

I pushed to get us out and into the Sea Pines Forest Preserve that afternoon. It was one place that I enjoy exploring, now that I’ve found it. Many visitors to Hilton Head Island are unaware of this large and mostly unimproved place.

We did find it and I did come back. And this heron is one reason that I will keep coming back.

We spent a couple of hours in the 605 acre preserve. I could count nearly on one hand, the number of folks we encountered. Mostly we walked without having others cross our paths. The birds, alligators, turtles and other creatures were around, and tolerated our traipse through their domain.

Peaceful, isn’t it.
