One thing I’ve worked to learn, in my 33 years of marriage to my dear bride Karen Sue, is to try to really hear what she says. Many times, I fail miserably, but there are times I can point to where her words of advice have made a tremendous difference to me. This photograph is one of those times when I did listen, hear what she said and took heed.
“You have to go and take a photograph of the red maple on Washington Street. It’s absolutely gorgeous!” said my partner and bride, Karen Sue.
I took her advice today and here’s the result.
I figured that I wanted those red leaves to have a full sun behind them, so I waited until after four o’clock in the afternoon. The sun was still in front of the golden hour, so the color is not yet colored with the long rays of the near-sunset light. I positioned myself so the trunk of the tree was blocking the sun’s disk and the leaves were glowing.
One nice added touch, is the dots of red leaves laying on top of the new green growth of grass.
The sky could not have been better. A nice blue with a covering of white but smoothly-chaotic clouds to add interest.
This might make up for the countless other times that I fail to fully hear. Just maybe.

Makes my heart sing!
I have a smile plastered across my face at your comment, Katya!
So lovely – Karen’s got a great eye – and you seem to be a pretty darn good listener (and artist) judging from this wonderful image! I DO miss this time of year back in the Midwest but I’m listening to our first rain in the quiet early evening. The seasons have definitely changed…
Thank you, Barbara. We had a nice, day-long soaking rain recently after a near-drought summer and a very dry October. Listening to the gentler patter of rain drops had a soothing sound. I’m looking forward to winter’s scenery here. Fog there? I’d love to come see some. What is ordinary to one becomes extra-ordinary to another from far away
Your beautiful bride was absolutely right! And those clouds are FANTASTIC! =) They really make the picture for me.
And by the way…being a bride who doesn’t get listened to very well…no, this probably won’t make up for those other times! =) LOL
Beautiful shot, Matt! =)
gorgeous
Looks like the burning bush of Moses. Just beautiful, Matt!
Thank you Jewell – 33 years and she’s still not done with me!
Thank you, Linda
Trish – I’m grateful it wasn’t really on fire!
LOL – husbands are always a work in progress! Kind of like the constructions zones throughout Illinois. =)
Good one, Jewell. I could go on and on about Illinois politics
