Autumn Twilight

The sun had just set, the moon had made its presence known by the silver crescent and the fowl on the lagoon were tucking their heads under wing, having finally realized that I was not going to be tossing any bread out to them.

Every so often, as I waited on the changing light of twilight, I heard the soft beat of a runner’s steps as it passed by behind me. Occasional groups of ducks or geese would silently swoop through the frame as they headed off for some other trees or brush to bed down for the night.

Mostly, there was a peaceful silence that filled the air.

I had to pull myself away at last, when the light faded to a deep blue. I wanted to stay and see what happened next as the night deepened into black and the stars came out. I needed to be home, and so I left.

Perhaps on another day, I will stay and see what the night brings.

  1. ‘The Lagoon’ is a title that conjures up the only thing I knew with that haunting name, and what a joy it was to play there and choose a candy at Mr. Snow’s Stand. Thanks for this lovely view and memory.

  2. Thank you, Nick – Mr. Snow’s stand is having a similar structure built at the same location. The Park District is restoring Iron Spring at that site, with a concession building where Mr. Snow’s stand was located. http://www.sj-r.com/top-stories/x294029551/Reopened-Iron-Spring-brings-taste-of-the-past-to-Washington-Park
