Harvest In Progress

The harvest season in upon us in full force. This field of corn is partially harvested, with giant swaths of corn stalks reduced to stubble, alongside row upon row of orderly rows waiting for the harvester to take them.

I always find it interesting to see this in-between stage as I travel the rural roads of Central Illinois. There’s such a stark difference between the orderly rows and the leftover stubble. Add the vast sky that this day found full of clouds and bits of blue sky, and it was irresistible. I slowed down to a crawl and fired off a few frames.

I kept my eye out for other traffic, but other than the occasional semi-tractor pulling a load of corn kernels to the grain elevator, it was just me and the folks in the fields. Later on down the road, I found myself behind a large tractor pulling a corn bin behind it. I kept my distance and didn’t mind the slow pace. The farmers have to use the roads to get from field to field, and I’m invading their territory at this time of year. Better to be safe and use the time to relax instead of get frustrated by the pace.

So today this is a view into the local farmer’s life. I’m grateful for their efforts.

  1. I love this image – it really IS Central Illinois in my mind! I especially love the sense of place that you bring with your photographs. Thanks, Matt.

  2. Thank you kindly, Barbara. You can’t take the prairie out, no matter how far one roams

  3. Ditto Barbara’s comment, again. And, to throw in a pun, you can’t take the prairie out of the Convention Center.
