Family Picnic

A trio of butterflies, enjoying the sunshine and nectar that this Sedum plant is providing for their meal.

My brother is a gardener of many years and keen observer of all things in nature. He knows I enjoy a good photo opportunity, so he did me a kindness at our recent family gathering. He informed me that the Sedum plants that line the front walk at my niece’s home are covered in butterflies and other various insects. “What’s Sedum look like?” was my uneducated reply, eager to find the visual pot of gold. Larry described the plant and the flowers, then said: “Just look for the butterflies!”

I went to look and found the winged gathering right away.

The pickings must have been good, because not only were there butterflies, but many variety of bees and one wicked looking wasp. I didn’t let the potential for a sting get in my way, and patiently stooped and stood still while allowing the skittish creatures a chance to settle down and get used to me. Once settled, I was able to get a few good images from the collective lunch bunch.

It’s nice to have friends and family who point you in the direction of visual interest. I learn a few things along the way, such as what Sedum looks like.
