Suddenly, there he was, standing still on top of a small hill, alert to all potential danger around him.
I stopped the car and immediately started composing and snapping away. I got several frames off, when I became too much of an object of concern for this buck. He trotted off down the hill quickly, catching up with a doe and a young deer. The family he was protecting.
This guy then nudged his two charges ahead of me. I started to get out of their way, but that was some sign of danger to them. They picked up the pace to a run and started paralleling my car. I stopped and the group took off in front of me, across the road, leaping the fence to another field, and just that fast, they were gone.
Later, I thought, “I wish I had kept shooting so I could have got them leaping.” But really, that wasn’t the safe thing to do. I already had a good set of photos. No need to push beyond my limits.
I had another perfect profile photo, but this one, with the birds flying away, and the stag turned to check out what could be flushing them out of the field, this one is much better to my eye.
Perfection isn’t always in being perfect, but often is found in being “in the moment.”
I try to live in the moment. This moment, was priceless.
