Sunset in Winter

The snow lay between the leftover stalks of corn. The sunset breathes it’s last warmth of daylight as the moisture-laden clouds fly low overhead. The orange and pinks, just a reminder of the warmth that bathed the day.

The solitary sentinel of a tree, taking up the last bit of light and preparing to withstand the night freeze and, perhaps, a bit more snow or freezing rain. The tree against the sunset is what I was looking for.

I headed west as I saw the potential for good twilight skies. the clouds were sparse at sunset, when the low dark cloud bank rolled in. The sparse branches of the trees have been calling to me of late. Getting them composed against the sunset sky is what I had in mind. I’ll pursue it further in future outings. This is a start.

I had just gotten this one when my cell phone went off, my uncle Don calling from Mexico, asking me a question or two, and unintentionally rubbing the temperature difference between our two locales. His being 79F and mine being 31F and falling. He’s an American ex-pat, enjoying the warmth of the climate and the people in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico during the winter months. I vicariously enjoy his tales of good people, superb meals with good companions, and the rich culture of the area.

One day, Karen & I may head that way to warm up and sample the warmer neighbors to the south, but for now, we do enjoy the changing of the seasons. Nothing makes you enjoy spring more than a cold winter. This winter feels like it’s been colder and wetter than recent years. It might not be in reality, but my perception is my reality.

With longer daylight and later sunsets, spring seems to be just out of sight, around the corner.

Anticipation is part of the joy of living.

  1. Love the lonely, sparse tree offset by the fading light and looming clouds. And the marvelous horizon of the prairie.

  2. Absolutely beautiful!

  3. I just ordered a print. The next time I see you, I would love for you to write your quote, “Anticipation is part of the joy of living,” with your signature.

This one, like many, spoke to me and I want to see it all the time. For the end of winter, just on the cusp of spring, is usually when I’m about to bloom too.
