Finally I get a good photograph of Smokey.
She’s a feisty one. Always on the move, and hard to get a good pose.
Smokey has made her home, during the day, on top of my recliner. The same recliner that I have as the center of my computing station. I’ll be sitting there, with the monitor swung in front of me on an articulating arm, the keyboard in my lap, working on some photo or such. Out of the blue, Smokey bounds up to my chest and on to her perch on top of the chair, behind my head.
From this lofty height, she checks out the world outside our sun room windows. Birds, squirrels, neighbors, and visitors. All hold her interest for a moment or more.
Chris was over that day, working on some of his photos, using my setup and hence in my chair. I was sitting in Karen’s chair, just a couple feet away. I looked over after a bit and noticed that Smokey was sprawled out over the top of the chair.
I had to get this photo!
I got up and grabbed my camera. I still had the 50mm f1.4 prime lens on from our family Valentine’s day gathering, and didn’t take time to make any change. I did stop it down eventually, to f2.2, to give me a bit more depth of field (deepen the plane of focus). I grabbed a series of compositions, with Smokey going from looking asleep to a nice yawning sequence, to this sharp observer of life beyond the glass.
She’s a real sweetheart. She cuddles with both Karen and I. She’ll come up to me while I’m typing, and nudge my nose, looking for some gentle neck rubbing. Never a loud meow, mostly just a quiet ‘Me’ out of her.
I keep my cameras close at hand, just for moments like this.

Smokey the Cat,
Smokey the Cat,
He can find a fire
Before you know
where the heck it’s at.
He can smell the smoke before it’s a flame,
That’s why they call him Smokey,
That’s how he got his name.
(with apologies to the Forest Service}
Beautiful cat!
