Morning Flight

Karen took this one on her last early pre-dawn morning walk of the beach at Hilton Head Island, in South Carolina.

I was going through the photos in search of one to put up for my daily photo, when I came across this one. It’s not Karen’s favorite, but I like it a bunch.

We would see a flock of pelicans such as here, flying in formation, their wingtips barely above the ocean. I was and remain curious as to the purpose of this formation flying. When feeding, I would always see one bird up high, circling and then diving into the water for their catch of fish.

The other bird on the sandy beach is a sandpiper, I believe. In search of food washed up by the waves.

You can’t tell it from this one photo, but the fog was in and visibility wasn’t more than a hundred to two hundred yards. The sun quickly burned that off, and the day was another sunny treat.

Each of us has it’s inner muse that calls to us. These pelicans and the sandpiper easily follow their natural calling. I have to tune in to hear my inner muse, and take courage to follow it’s guide. When I do, I find tasks easier to perform, knowing that I’m on the course that’s right for me.

It’s easier being me, than trying to be someone or something other than me.

  1. Cool capture of pelicans preparing to dive in formation… I suspect that’s unusual, as most of their type fish alone. And the piper keeps piping. As our neighbor, Mr. Dombrowski, would say (paraphrasing), ‘Look at the wonder if the pelican, his beak can hold more than his belly-can.’

  2. I love how this scene is so very still even though every part of it is about movement. Reminds me of that elusive yet beautiful feeling of being centered in the midst of our life swirl.

This week in particular I’ve been trying to “tune in to hear my inner muse,” thinking I hadn’t succeeded in that “tuning in.” I’m thinking now, however, that I *did* tune in … I just need to “take courage to follow its guide.”

    Thank you Matt!

  3. Amen, beautifully said.

    Happy Thanksgiving.
