As we were trolling along Broad Creek, near Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, in search of our trio of dolphin which were herding fish to strand-feed, this pelican was smack in the middle of our way.
This being his territory, we were supposed to stop or move out of it’s way.
We kept moving forward.
It was a game of chicken, and the pelican blinked.
As we got to it’s danger zone, it took off in a furious beating of those massive wings, keeping us in it’s sights as it flew off to safety.
We kept seeing pelicans diving into the ocean, creek and other waterways, as they hunted for their sustenance in the fish-filled waters below. The sight of either a single bird or a pack of four or more of them flying low, just over the wave-tops of the water, was a magnificent sight. A delight that I never tired of seeing.
We look forward to coming back and seeing more of natures variety, next year.

What a great action shot! Highlighted by the perfect V of the bird’s wings. As a now city-guy, it’s refeshing to see all the nature in the water and along the shore. Thanks for this display of mother Earth, which is so endangered by the thoughtless ways we treat the non-protected areas.
