Jean Nina Miki

Restoration of a scanned photo.

My mother, her mother and her sister. Jean, Nina, Miki.

I figure this was taken sometime in the 1920’s. My mother was born in 1910, and looks to be 10 or older here.

The lady in the middle is my grandmother, Nina Alice Brewster Hartley. Her genealogy traces back to Elder William Brewster who immigrated to the America from England on the ship Mayflower at Plymouth Colony in 1620. Elder Brewster

Mildred Helena Hartley Barnes, known as Miki, was my mom’s only sister. Miki was an artist and lived on the Gulf Coast of Central Florida.

My mother, Jean Lenore Hartley Penning was quite the interesting woman, as I’ve come to realize over the years and stories told.

Mom met my father in German language class at the University of Nebraska in 1929. They both graduated, my father moving on to medical school. When Mom told Dad that four years of engagement was enough, Dad took the hint and they married with nearly nothing in the way of assets but their determination and his future as a medical doctor. More on that at a later posting.

You can see that Miki moved, as her hair ribbon and eyes are slightly blurred.

Check out Mom’s long banana curls in her hair.

I removed all the tears and scratches in this photo. I changed the color to a black & white from a faded sepia.

A family photo restored and preserved on the Internet.

Wow. I’ve never seen this one. Beautiful restoration. Thanks for this enlightenment on Mom and her up-close comparison with her mother and Miki. And for a peek into the 1920’s U.S.

Boy do I see Sarah (and Mary) in Grandma Jean. What a beautiful picture.

I was thinking the same thing, Michele. Especially Nina’s face.

I miss Mommy moo. Can I have a paper copy of this one, too? Ya did a cool job. I guess I was right with Miki spelling!

My mom’s name is Nina, and my grandma, Maria, taught German. Similarities, though minor, are fun to find.

It’s such a treasure, this photo.
