Minding the Cannon

This park overlooks Charleston Harbor in Charleston, South Carolina.

Out in the harbour is Fort Sumter, which marks the place where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired in 1861.

We didn’t visit the fort, but did enjoy the history in this park. There are original cannon which date to the Civil War. I’m sure the trees are close to that in age.

This gentleman, sitting on one of the benches beside one of the historic cannon caught my eye.

  1. Nice contrast: beauty and the beast; nature and man’s ability to destroy it; the glory of the South and its source of self-destruction.
