Glistening Ice

Glistening 6

After a day and night of sleet, frozen rain, and snow, we woke to the sound of cracking tree limbs and snowblowers.

Our cars are out in the elements, so my bride found her doors shut solid with ice as she struggled to get into work early. A wonderful neighbor who is a city fireman was up shoveling. He graciously offered to take her in to work. Off she went.

I saw the unplowed streets with about 5 inches of snow, the two (now three, another one just cracked and went down) large tree limbs down in my front yard, and decided that I could manage work from afar.

Out of 19 staff, only 5 made it to work in my group. Two were there prior to 7 AM, they are the hearty and adventurous types. The other 3 made it in but just a bit late. From their reports, I’d say that there are about 1/4th or less the number of folks at work today.

The streets were slick early on, due to the rather thick layer of ice and compact sleet beneath about 5 inches of snow. About 30% of the city is without power due to power lines down and transformers exploding in what some have said is a beautiful display of color.

I’m one of the fortunate ones. I’ve got electricity, cable (not that I watch it much - HGTV and the Food Network get old) and …….Internet connectivity!!!! Lest I forget, I also have heat. Natural Gas. I even loaded up with groceries and gasoline yesterday. This time I was prepared.

There are lots of people in this area comparing this storm to the Great Ice Storm of March 1978, but this is nothing compared to that one. When that ice storm hit Central Illinois, everything went dark. Almost everyone was without power. It took weeks for some folks to get power turned back on. This was just a reminder that Mother Nature is very complex and sometimes unforgiving.

This photo caught my eye because of the cross-like flare of of the ice covering the tree limbs. Pretty.

I’ll be here. Working to get my snow cleared, and my tree limbs removed. Take Care.
